Ecobuild Exhibition - 2012

2012 saw another stunning ANS living wall at Ecobuild. Using a number of different species of internal plants, the living wall was an interesting design. Mounted into the wall, was a large plasma screen, showing some of the recent projects completed. The stand included a full model of the irrigation system, also integrating a rainwater harvesting system into the living wall. 4 – 6 people were managing the stand each day, and we were ridiculously busy!

Fermoy Road - North London

Amidst the dust and traffic of busy North London, a vertical landscape has been installed at the end of a 5 storey residential block of flats. The vertical living wall helps reduce the noise levels of city traffic, thereby creating a welcoming environment for the residents. This living wall had to be worked around quite a large number of windows.

Floriade - Venlo

In 2012, the World Horticulture Exhibition Floriade is held in Venlo (NL). ANS Living walls are on display there! With 2 interior and 2 exterior living walls on show, the organization has all been sorted by ANS’ Dutch distributor – Han Rijndorp, of Otwee.nu.

Marks and Spencers - Norwhich

As part of the branding process, Marks and Spencers are now incorporating living walls into their designs. The second living wall to be installed for the group was at the Norwich store.
The green wall was designed to blend in with the existing open space to the rear of the church and increase the visual drama of the urban landscape. 152 square meters of wall was covered with indigenous species chosen. The range of plants selected, comprised of 11 different species, some of which will flower in different seasons, meaning the living wall will visibly change naturally throughout the year. A regular maintenance regime is in place, ensuring that the quality living wall will visibly change naturally throughout the year. A regular maintenance regime is in place, ensuring that the quality of appearance is maintained. Megaro Hotel

The internal living wall at the Megaro hotel in London really put the ‘icing on the cake’ so to speak. With 4 interior living walls installed throughout the hotel, the place was ready to throw open its doors!

Montpellier Square

Another prime example of how the ANS System can be used to create a stunning, internal living wall. A natural, fresh and embracing appearance was achieved at this private residence incorporating European hardwood to achieve a unique, decorative finish. Who says the garden belongs outside? Bring it in. It’s the new wallpaper. The new way to decorate. Water the walls, don’t emulsion!

Catlin Group Ltd – Interior Wall

To complete the look of their stunning offices, a living wall was required. ANS worked closely with Catlin’s to complete this bespoke scheme. Due to the wall being double sided and on the 7th floor, weight was a critical consideration. The ANS modules were fixed to a wooden framework (fabricated by ANS), and worked well with the curvature of the wall. A maintenance contract was agreed, to ensure the wall is always looking at its best.

Chelsea flower show 2011

35m2 wall was supplied to the Tourism Malaysia Garden. Designed by David Cubero and James Wong of Amphibian designs, using interior plants to create this Malaysian style design. The garden is accessed through a series of floating entrance frames that lead from a stilted villa to a sunken seating pavilion, surrounded by a pool studded with drifts of fragrant tropical water lilies.

Wrapping around the whole scheme, a recessed brown limestone wall densely planted with curtains of trailing jungle vines provides a dramatic foil to the foreground of floating terraces of tropical plants, punctuated in places by streams of falling water.

Digby road – London

The living wall at the Network Housing Groups new affordable housing development, near Hommerton Station (London), was finally completed in June 2011, bringing much needed greening to the area of London, using the bespoke, ANS Living wall system™. It was a huge challenge for ANS, as it stands the tallest living wall in Europe; possibly the world. With it topping out at the 14th floor, the wall covers over 220m2, using in excess of 24,600 plants.

Due to the height, maintenance will be carried out by experienced abseillers, trained in horticulture. The top of the wall ran smoothly into the green roof (also supplied by ANS Group), using the same species of plants to ensure good coverage and establishment. The green roof runs up at a 45° slope for approximately 6m, until it leveled out across the remainder of the roof. All in all, approximately 750m2 of ANS Green Roof System was supplied to the roof areas.

For those of you with an interest in the subject, the project recently won the Estates Gazette Green Award – Residential Development of the year 2010. A brilliant ending, to a fantastic project!

Marks & Spencers – Sheffield

When the truly sustainable store was opened in Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, the assertive living wall forms an important part of the buildings envelope.

The new store, covering approx 12,400 sq ft, was built from scratch on a former brownfield site. The whole bent of design was sustainability and a number of notable features have been incorporated, including LED lighting as opposed to standard lighting, reclaimed bricks from a local mill, rainwater harvesting reducing mainswater, natural ventilation and electric carcharging points in the car park.

A green roof, consisting of sedum planting was also supplied by ANS, along with the living wall, creating wildlife habitats. Considerable insulating benefits also come with the package; all water for the irrigation system is taken from the underground, rainwater harvesting tank.

National art gallery – Trafalgar square, London

ANS successfully worked with GE to install in Trafalgar square, the first living wall that brings Art to life! The wall was designed to bring one of Art’s masterpieces to life – A Wheatfield, with Cypresses, one of Van Gogh’s famous paintings, was depicted in plants. The actual painting itself can be seen in Room 45 of the National gallery.

640 modules were grown, using over 8000 plants of varying species. The artwork was created by hand-planting each plant into the individual modules, using a numbered drawing. Once the modules were all planted, at ANS’ southern nursery, they were hung vertically to establish and then dispatched.

Due to the very tight deadlines on the project, the whole installation took 3 days to complete.

Westfield Shopping Centre West London

Westfield Shopping Towns had a planning requirement at their White
City development to include a greening element to help overcome the
ecological impact of such a huge project.

The wall was completed in November 2008, and proclaimed the
longest vertical wall planting in the world. It is comprised entirely of
Modules with vertically growing foliage.

Over 200,000 plants, of mixed variety, in 5,000 Modules, all supplied
with established planting, grown and installed by ANS Group Europe.

Our skilled team of Horticulturists, Designers & Installers, worked
together with the Westfield Team to draw the entire project together
at every stage.

The successful installation of the Living Wall at Westfield opens up a
new chapter in Landscape Design, and is living proof that the ANS system suits both very large and very small projects.

Planteria Reception – Interior Wall

When the new reception area was created for Planteria, a living wall seemed to fit the bill!

Some very positive feedback has been received from the office staff. Some comments made are:

‘1st impressions always count; this one is revitalizing’

‘Variety is the spice of life’

‘Our living wall gives a refreshingly inviting reception to any visitor’
National exhibition centre Birmingham

The request from the project team at the NEC was to provide screening, and a natural sound barrier. As with Westfield, a support structure was specially built, upon which the Modules were suspended. Although there is a similar purpose to Westfield, the wall for the NEC is an entirely different design and planting selection. The uniformed strips of colour and texture, result in a visually stunning spectacle, that draws planting and design very closely together.
City Inn Hotel

Modules were grown and delivered for Frosts Cityscapes, to create this spectacular wall, stretching up to level 11 of the hotel.
Southampton Regional Business Centre

The main aim of this wall was to achieve high BREEAM points.

With this in mind, all the plant species were chosen to attract bees, butterflies and other wildlife into the city of Southampton.

ANS Provides the answer!

Completed in 2009, shade loving species were used to ‘green up’ the basement area of this property.
Long Black ltd – Internal Wall

NK Homes – London

When this new domestic property was built in London, space in the courtyard was extremely limited. With no room for pots and pans, it was decided to use the wall!
Biggin Hill Airfield – Kent

This superb interior wall was recently installed in an executive lounge at the Biggin hill airfield.

Every 2 weeks, a maintenance team visits the wall to report any deficiencies, carry out a health check on all planting, calibrate irrigation if needed and apply a liquid feed. This ensures the wall is always looking its best, as it greets passengers!
Private Dwelling – London

with large sections of cold, rendered walls facing the property, a greening solution was needed. However, there was very limited space, hence why the ANS Modules were used.

Over 1600 modules were installed, with 13 species of plants, all chosen to suit the shade aspect of the courtyard
All ANS Living Walls are designed by our inhouse team, working with clients, designers and architects to anyspecific style and shape, in both interior and exterior environments. Plant species, selected from an extensive proven planting list purposely designed for the ANS System, are chosen according to the location of the walls. The modules are then planted by hand from a design plan, providing a living solution with colour and texture.
Kentish town residence – London
Private garden – Chelsea

When this garden was re-designed, a bland, rendered wall was the one thing spoiling the completed appearance. Enter the ANS Systems! What better way to green up the vertical space? ‘Bands of planting’ was the description that the designers had to work on.
Chelsea flower show – 2010

These modules grown for Chelsea, were all planted with one species of grass. The walls were part of a more complex garden; whilst plain, in the situation, they were very effective.
Cote Brasserie, Mailbox, Birmingham

Surrounding the Cote Brasserie restaurant, in the Mailbox shopping centre, an ANS Living wall has been installed, following the shape of the steps leading down to the restaurant.

The unique feature of this wall, is that all the water for the irrigation, is pumped from the nearby canal. A filter system is used to ensure no harmful substances are fed to the plants.
Private residence – London

There is no minimum, on the different species of plants used in any particular wall. On this project, only Ivies were used to create the vertical living wall. Maintenance is minimal; the plants are trimmed as and when is required.
Bramerton Terrace - London

ANS Living wall modules were supplied to this project to complete the modern look of this courtyard. With slate tiles running around the courtyard in conjunction with the living wall, a beautiful modern style was achieved.
The Body Shop - Westfield, Stratford

Another very interesting internal living wall; this was installed for the body shop group in the Westfield (Stratford) complex.

Due to the nature of the store, a living wall depicting a world map was requested. Soleirolia soleirolii was used for the 'sea' – a number of herbs and other plants formed the countries. The wall is divided by the shop front glass, meaning 2/3's of the wall is inside the shop and a 1/3 is outside. Each country contains native species of plants, which then correspond with the line of natural products in the shop. Plants are regularly replaced to keep up with the changing product lines.

Olympics (Aquatic Centre)

500m2 of ANS Living Wall System™ were supplied and installed mid-2011 on the Aquatic Centre. After extensive research by the architects involved in the project, the ANS System was the only system that could handle the complex curves and angles of the structure. A full size cross-section was created on the nursery to demonstrate exactly how the ANS System would achieve full coverage with no gaps.

Planted with blue moor grasses (Sesleria Caerulea), the design was to resemble the rippling of water. As the plants move, swathes of blue and green are created, achieving an awe-inspiring visual impact to the 'already stunning' Aquatic centre.
Sutton High Street

Wrapping round two sides of the Wilkinson store, it is a major part of the Sutton high street redevelopment. Councillor Jayne McCoy, executive member for planning, economic development and housing, said: "This living, vertical garden is a signature part of the town centre improvement project, and I am pleased that it has finally been delivered. The wall will be in bloom all year round and will bring health benefits, as well as colour to the area."

The wall was sponsored by TFL and Wilkinson's, working alongside Sutton Borough Council.
